About Eli Lilly and Company

Eli Lilly and Company was founded in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly, who sought to develop reliable, high-quality medicines during an era when unregulated remedies were common. His guiding principle to his team was simple yet powerful: “Take what you find here and make it better and better.” More than 145 years later, this commitment continues to inspire everything we do—from supporting patients and healthcare providers, to empowering our employees and making a positive impact in the communities we serve. Lilly is known for several groundbreaking medications, including the antipsychotic Zyprexa (olanzapine) introduced in 1996, Prozac (fluoxetine) for depression (1986), and Cymbalta (duloxetine) launched in 2004. In recent years, Lilly’s key therapeutic focus has shifted to diabetes care, with major contributions such as Humalog (insulin lispro) and Trulicity (dulaglutide). Among our proudest achievements are being the first to mass-produce insulin, and playing a vital role in the distribution of the Jonas Salk polio vaccine. Lilly also pioneered the use of recombinant DNA technology to develop human insulin, with products like Basaglar, Humulin, and Humalog, the latter being the first biosimilar insulin approved in the U.S. Since opening our first lab in Indianapolis, Lilly has grown into a company known for innovation and impact. With a portfolio of nearly 100 medicines and counting, we continue to pursue new discoveries to advance global health and transform lives.
